Book Review: The Code of the Extraordinary Mind by Vishen Lakhiani

This book is awesome!

I originally took this book out of the library back in 2020 at the start of Covid while I was building the foundation of Pretty Aggressive Coaching.

What I appreciate most about this book is that it follows an age-old formula that is extremely effective but, through that framework, brings forward the newer age hacks for bossing the crap out of your life. It’s also not advertised as a ‘trauma recovery book’ but it 100% is exactly that. The “10 Laws for an Extraordinary Life,” as outlined in the book, have a ton of similarities to my 13 Pillars of Resilience & for a good reason.

I wrote & published my first book, Beyond Damage, with my 13 Pillars before I knew this book existed. When I read it & saw the comparison, I have to admit, I did a little happy dance. My brain put together & explained how to recover from developmental trauma with similar tools & steps that the creator of Mindvalley had explained how to have the most incredible life. Yay me!

The format of the book is a system I learned in design school for presenting: tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you told them. If you want people to listen, understand, engage & remember - this rule of 3 is impactful. Offer an overview of the ideas you’re going to present. Then fully offer the ideas. Then recap the ideas that you have gone over, at the end.

This book does exactly that.

The best I can do is show you the chapters, hoping to draw you in & get you hooked on this book.

So let’s do that.

He’s divided the book up into 4 parts:

Part 1: Living in the Culturescape: How you were shaped by the world around you

Law 1: Transcend the Culturescape

Law 2: Question the Brules (Bullsh*t rules)

Part 2: The Awakening: The Power to Choose Your Version of the World

Law 3: Practice Consciousness Engineering

Law 4: Rewrite Your Models of Reality

Law 5: Upgrade Your Systems for Living

Part 3: Recoding Yourself: Transforming Your Inner World

Law 6: Bend Reality

Law 7: Live in Blissipline

Law 8: Create a vision for Your Future

Part 4: Becoming Extraordinary: Changing the World

Law 9: Be Unfuckwithable

Law 10: Embrace Your Quest

This essentially goes through:

How to change the rules

How to heal your mind

How to remove dangerous beliefs

How to learn new things incredibly fast

How to be lucky

How to find happiness

How to know what to seek

How to weather the inevitable storms

How to find your calling

The language & approach in Vishen’s writing is helpful, specifically for my brain, because it focuses on creating systems. It addresses spiritual life habits as a computer system with hardware & software. He talks about ‘writing code’ inside yourself to alter the outcome of your life.

That is right up my alley.

It’s worth mentioning that this book talks a lot about visualization & pre-imagining the reality you want to have happen. For someone like me who doesn’t like the ‘hippy-dippy, woo-woo’ style of creating an optimal life - this stuff works. People use the word ‘manifesting’ A LOT these days. But in the quantum world of science, it’s a real thing. If you pre-decide how you want your life or a situation to look, you can get pretty damn close; especially if you actually take action with clear intention. (You can’t just sit on your butt & ‘wish.’)

It's a great self improvement book for anyone, at any stage of self growth. The tools are direct & realistic. His personal stories are woven in lightly & don't overtake the content. It's also a good book to have on the shelf, holding enough merit for an annual read.
